Mozilla Firefox 95 Update to Deploy RLBox Sandboxing Technology for Enhanced Browser Protection

Mozilla Firefox 95 update is being rolled out with a new sandboxing technology called RLBox that is touted to enhance the browser’s protection against malicious code. Mozilla says the new technology makes it easy and efficient to isolate potentially buggy code to make the browser secure so much so that even zero-day vulnerabilities in some cases are claimed to pose no threat to users on Firefox. Additionally, Mozilla has updated its bug bounty programme to pay researchers for bypassing the sandbox.Sandboxing is a practice that is used to keep potentially malicious code isolated from the rest of the organisation’s environment. As per a blog post by Mozilla, the RLBox sandboxing technique uses WebAssembly to isolate five modules of the Firefox browser. WebAssembly technology enables high-resource apps like games, video, and image editors to run in a browser at speed on par with a local computer. “Going forward, we can treat these modules as untrusted code, and even a zero-day vulnerability in any of them should pose no threat to Firefox,” the company said. The technology, which has been developed in collaboration with researchers at the University of California San Diego and the University of Texas, is now being released for all supported Firefox platforms (desktop and mobile). In order to understand how RLBox sandboxing works, we must first understand the nature of threats that are being posed online.Just like all major Web browsers that run content in their own sandboxed process to plug vulnerabilities, Firefox also isolates each site in its own process for protection. Mozilla says threat actors attack users by chaining together two vulnerabilities — “one to compromise the sandboxed process containing the malicious site and another to escape the sandbox”. To tackle this scare, multi-layer protection is needed. As mentioned, RLBox sandboxing technology compiles the code into WebAssembly instead of hoisting it into a separate process. It then compiles that WebAssembly into native code allowing Firefox to run trusted and untrusted code in the same process. Mozilla says RLBox helps in sanitising any values that come from the sandbox, resulting in enhanced protection from malicious code. Nvidia to Launch RTX 2060 From 2019, Now With 12GB Memory, to Combat Global GPU Shortage

Nvidia has confirmed the reissue of the RTX 2060 but now with 12GB of VRAM, a GPU that was launched in 2019, as part of a move to alleviate sky-high prices of GPUs during the global chip shortage. The original Nvidia RTX 2060 graphics card was released in 2019 and came with 6GB of memory. The company has announced that the renewed Nvidia RTX 2060 GPU with double the memory of the original model will soon be available, although pricing is yet to be announced. The company has announced the revised Nvidia RTX 2060 in the release notes for the company’s Game Ready Driver 497.00 that was launched on December 2. Nvidia has also listed the specifications on its website, revealing that the new GeForce RTX 2060 will feature a higher base clock speed and offers 2,176 CUDA cores, instead of the 1,920 cores found on the 2019 model.Power consumption is also higher at 185W, up from 160W on the older model, according to Nvidia. As previously mentioned, the GPU will also feature 12GB of memory, twice that of the RTX 2060 from two years ago. The specifications of the renewed RTX 2060 GPU suggest it could be positioned as an entry-level graphics card for gamers, in a market with a high demand for GPUs. The company has not provided a launch date, but The Verge reports that the GPU will be available from December 7.Earlier this year, Nvidia had announced that it would relaunch the GTX 1050 Ti and the RTX 2060, in an attempt to alleviate the problems caused by the global semiconductor shortage that has hit the computing industry. Over the past year, scalpers (who buy GPUs in bulk and sell them at a premium) and cryptocurrency mining have ensured that the prices of GPUs like the Nvidia RTX 3060 are high, while stocks are limited. The company is re-releasing older, lower-powered GPUs is to ensure graphics cards are available for those who need to purchase GPUs without waiting for restocks.
