Myanmar swimmer: ‘Genocidaires do not deserve to be in the Olympics’

In a Facebook post, swimmer Win Htet Oo said by rejecting the Myanmar Olympic Committee he had foregone any chance of competing at the Tokyo Olympic Games later this year.Currently training in Melbourne, Win Htet Oo’s Facebook profile says he’s “a Myanmar swimmer dreaming about Tokyo 2020.”The swimmer has been a vocal critic of the Myanmar in recent weeks.”I do not wish to participate in the Tokyo Games under the stewardship of a NOC [National Olympic Committee] that is tied to a regime that continues to inflict suffering on my people,” said Win Htet Oo in another Facebook post on April 10.The IOC did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment, but the organization told AFP that “‘to the best of our knowledge,'” Win Htet Oo had not been selected by the Myanmar team.World Swimming Magazine describes Win Htet Oo as one of Myanmar’s “top swimmers,” who swam for his country at the 2013 and 2019 Southeast Asian GamesWin Htet Oo is ranked as 166th in the men’s 50-meter freestyle rankings on the website of swimming’s governing body (Fédération Internationale De Natation). But he is no longer listed as being part of the Myanmar national team. The Myanmar Olympic Committee did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.READ: Protests and demonstrations banned at 2020 Tokyo OlympicsIn February, Myanmar armed forces commander in chief Gen. Min Aung Hlaing seized power, overthrowing the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy party and installing a military junta. The following months have seen ongoing protests against his rule and the rise of a Civil Disobedience movement in which thousands of blue- and white-collar workers including doctors, teachers, civil servants and factory workers have gone on strike with the aim of disrupting the economy and unseating the general.Security forces have brutally suppressed the protests with deadly and systematic crackdowns in which police and soldiers have shot people dead in the streets and arbitrarily detained perceived opponents.More than 750 people have been killed by security forces since the coup, and more than 4,500 arrested, according to advocacy group Assistance Association of Political Prisoners. On March 28, UN officials condemned “systematic” attacks on peaceful protesters and called on the international community to “protect the people of Myanmar from atrocity crimes.””The shameful, cowardly, brutal actions of the military and police — who have been filmed shooting at protesters as they flee, and who have not even spared young children — must be halted immediately,” said Alice Wairimu Nderitu, United Nations Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, and Michelle Bachelet, the High Commissioner for Human Rights in a joint statement.READ: Which nation is expected to top Olympic medal table?A UN Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar in 2018 called for Min Aung Hlaing to be investigated and prosecuted for genocide over his military’s brutal crackdown on the Rohingya Muslim minority in Rakhine State in 2017.In his latest Facebook post, Win Htet Oo said he’d been inspired “by the continued defiance to military rule in Myanmar by an intersectional movement that will never submit. Their bravery is undying.””The National Unity Government is the only legitimate representative of the people of Myanmar and all international organisations and governments should recognise the NUG as Myanmar’s government,” added Win Htet Oo, who swam for New York University between 2012 and 2015.Correction: A previous version of this report incorrectly stated Win Htet Oo’s ranking on the website of swimming’s governing body.

Nigeria’s president vows to fight militant groups and fix economy as activists call for anti-government protests

Nigeria’s president vows to fight militant groups and fix economy as activists call for anti-government protests

“In the last two years we have witnessed and overcome a good number of tests and challenges” that are “especially related to our collective security,” Buhari said during a televised address marking the country’s Democracy Day. “Let me assure you, my fellow citizens, that every incident, however minor, gives me great worry and concern. We will, by the grace of God, put an end to these challenges,” he said. Buhari, who campaigned on a platform to end terrorism and violence by armed groups, has come under increased criticism over continuing deadly attacks in the northeast and southeast that have resulted in an economic and a humanitarian crisis. During his speech on Saturday, Buhari also said his government is taking steps to address youth unemployment and poverty but admitted “there is much more to be done and we are doing our best.”Activist groups have called for Democracy Day protests and people took to the streets in several parts of the country on Saturday, including in the capital Abuja, where protesters gathered holding placards, saying “Buhari must go.”There were also protests in the southwestern city of Ibadan. Olumayowa Okediran, member of the Students for Liberty group, who was at the protest in Ibadan, told CNN that young people are tired of Buhari’s administration.”We do not want to live under a tyrannical government that bans Twitter at a whim. We don’t want to live in a country where the police brutalizes us,” said Okediran.Last week the Nigerian government said it had “indefinitely suspended” Twitter’s operations in the country. The statement, posted on the Ministry of Information and Culture’s official Twitter handle on June 4, accused the American social media company of allowing its platform to be used “for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.”The suspension came two days after Twitter deleted a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari that was widely perceived as offensive. In that tweet on June 1, the Nigerian leader threatened to deal with people in the country’s southeast, whom he blames for the recurring attacks on public infrastructure in the region.CNN’s Nimi Princewill contributed to this report.

Norway to proceed with sound experiment on whales, despite protests

A research team is intending to capture a dozen juvenile minke whales off the Norwegian coast and use sensors placed on their skin to measure their brain responses in reaction to sound. The research team conducting the experiment says it is designed to understand which kinds of human-made ocean noise affect the whales, as human-made sound can have an impact on an animal’s hearing and behavior and cause it stress.”We have essentially no knowledge of their hearing, and it’s important to noise regulators to know what kind of noise might affect them,” Petter Kvadsheim, chief scientist at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI), told CNN. He added that the team won’t be testing the animals’ noise tolerance, or how they respond to the sound behaviorally. “We expose them to the lowest sound they can hear to find their hearing threshold, using electrophysiological methods developed for use on newborn children,” said Kvadsheim, who is the co-lead investigator on the experiment. He added that the experiment is ongoing. But 50 international scientists and veterinarians have called on Norway’s Prime Minister to cancel the trial, writing in an open letter that the capture and length of experimentation “has significant potential for causing injury and stress, potentially resulting in capture myopathy.” Capture myopathy is a non-infectious condition in wild and domestic animals in which muscle damage results from extreme exertion, struggle, or stress, and can be fatal.”Little is known about sedating or stunning wild whales and dolphins, and it is therefore rarely attempted. Available data indicate that sedation of baleen whales in the wild could be life-threatening,” UK-based organization Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), which spearheaded the letter, said in a separate statement. “We already know a great deal from observational studies about how high-amplitude, human-made noise affects baleen whales, so the proposed research is not only dangerous and unethical, it is also redundant,” they added.Norway’s Food Safety Authority, which approved the trial, acknowledged that the experiment, which involves catching the whales, keeping them in an enclosure for 3-4 days, and tagging them, “involves moderate distress and discomfort for up to six hours.”Ole Aamodt, head of the veterinary department at the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, said the experiment was considered to have “moderate” severity. “Procedures on animals as a result of which the animals are likely to experience short-term moderate pain, suffering or distress, or long-lasting mild pain, suffering or distress, as well as procedures that are likely to cause moderate impairment of the well-being or general condition of the animals, are classified as moderately severe,” Aamodt said. “There is nothing to indicate that this experiment should be regarded as severe,” he added.”We assess that the purpose of the experiment is well-described and justified, and that this justifies the burden on the animals,” he said. But in a statement of concern, the 50 international scientists who signed the letter said this is an “understatement,” adding: “This process risks causing the whale considerable stress leading to panic, creating a dangerous situation for both whales and humans.” More than 64,000 people have signed a petition calling for the experiment to be stopped.”We have been through a very thorough planning and permitting process to reduce the risk to a minimum,” Kvadsheim told CNN.”We expect that the animals will experience some level of stress, but we have veterinarians monitoring their health and welfare throughout the procedure. If animals are in danger or distress they will be released,” he added.
