Apple is expected to spotlight its smartwatch, iPad, and subscription services on Tuesday as it strives to reignite growth with a must-have holiday lineup.A keenly anticipated 5G iPhone considered vital to the company’s fortunes will likely star in a separate event later in the year due to disruption in production caused by the pandemic, according to analysts interviewed by AFP.Apple shares that had been soaring have slipped by more than seven percent this week. The Silicon Valley-based iPhone maker on Friday had a market value of $1.92 trillion based on share price, down from a record high of $2.3 trillion at the start of this month. But Apple remains the most expensive company on Wall Street. Amazon comes in second with a market value of $1.56 trillion dollars and Microsoft is third with a value of $1.54 trillion dollars. The Apple event was teased with a cryptic invitation reading “Time Flies.” The company has remained mum about what it has in store. It is expected to showcase products or services other than iPhones being launched for the year-end shopping season. That opens the potential for updates of Apple Watch, iPad, MacBook computers, services, and even Apple TV set-top boxes, according to analysts.A new iPad model could include enhanced augmented reality capabilities, and Apple services such as music, news, and television might be offered in an attractively priced subscription bundle, analysts said. The latest software powering Apple Watch already indicates sleep tracking is coming, and the company may enhance features for fitness or health uses.”There is competition in the smartwatch space, but Apple is the sales leader by a large margin and there is room for Apple to build on its lead,” said Techsponential lead analyst Avi Greengart.”Apple has admitted they are at least working on monitoring blood sugar with the watch; it would be enormous if they could pull that off.”Apple Watch also serves as an anchor to the tech giant’s mobile software, since it syncs with the iPhone.”The key part for Apple is to keep the base of iPhone users and sell them a ton of accessories like AirPods and get services,” said analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights and Strategy.Cherished China marketThe time is ripe for Apple to hit the market with an iPhone tailored for super-fast 5G telecom networks taking root around the world.Greengart is among those expecting Apple to host a separate event, perhaps in October, for new iPhone models including one for 5G telecom networks.5G networks are touted as promising an exponential leap in the amount and speed of wireless data, enabling advances in self-driving vehicles, virtual reality, connected health and more as sensors and servers communicate instantly.”Apple absolutely needs 5G right now,” Greengart said.”Not for the US, but for China where 5G is driving purchase decisions.”Apple rivals have already introduced 5G models, and China is far ahead of the US when it comes to the new generation networks.”5G is happening in China with or without Apple; in fact more 5G phones than non-5G phones are selling in China,” said analyst Moorhead.”US carriers are waiting for Apple to announce a 5G iPhone to put the pedal to the metal in the US.”US telecom firms are looking at a 5G iPhone as a catalyst for consumer interest that will justify big investments needed for those networks, according to analysts.New generation 5G networks have also taken shape in South Korea and in parts of Europe.Apple also needs an iPhone tuned for 5G to maintain its premium brand image, analysts added.”Because of all the supply chain rumours saying the iPhone is running a little late, they will want to announce it closer to the launch date,” said Technalysis Research chief analyst Bob O’Donnell.Baird senior research analyst William Power said in a report to investors that Apple’s “ecosystem” looks strong due to its wearables, services, and the potential 5G iPhone. TSMC Hikes Forecast as COVID-19 Pandemic Transforms Digital Demand

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing hiked its revenue outlook after logging record quarterly profit, and painted a bullish picture of demand picking up over the next two years as advanced technologies are adopted more widely. The chip sector has been one of the rare industries benefiting from the coronavirus pandemic with more people investing in premium devices as they spend longer hours at home and as corporations seek to add more bandwidth for remote workers. The world’s largest contract chipmaker said it now expects 2020 revenue to jump more than 30 percent, up from an earlier forecast of more than 20 percent and marking the second quarter in a row it has lifted its outlook. It predicted fourth-quarter revenue of between $12.4 billion (roughly Rs. 91,028 crores) and $12.7 billion (roughly Rs. 93,224 crores), compared with $10.4 billion (roughly Rs. 76,341 crores) booked in the same quarter a year ago.”COVID has accelerated the digital transformation,” Chief Executive C.C. Wei told an online earnings briefing, adding that robust demand for smartphones and other electronics as well as 5G technologies had spurred orders for high-end chips.Wei said TSMC’s clients were currently holding inventories at higher than historical levels due to uncertainties amid the pandemic and geopolitical tensions. Even so the company expects demand to pick up in 2021 and 2022, offsetting any inventory correction.”We don’t worry too much about it,” he said.Wei emphasised that TSMC’s position as the industry leader in advanced chips would hold it in good stead and that it is expected to outperform global foundry growth this year.In July-September, TSMC’s net profit surged 36 percent to a record TWD 137.3 billion (roughly Rs. 35,052 crores), well ahead of market expectations for TWD 124.9 billion (roughly Rs. 31,888 crores). Revenue handily beat the company’s own estimates, climbing 29.2 percent to $12.1 billion (roughly Rs. 88,838 crores).TSMC’s advanced chips are used in high-end smartphones such as Apple’s newly unveiled 5G iPhone 12 as well as in telecommunications technology and artificial intelligence.TSMC expects to see 5G-enabled devices quickly gain widespread popularity, predicting the uptake for 5G would be faster than for 4G.”All countries and regions are preparing to build up (5G) infrastructure right now…a lot of 5G phones will be introduced and that created a higher percentage penetration rate,” Wei said. This demand has helped TSMC offset a loss of orders from Huawei after the US imposed extensive restrictions on sales to the Chinese telecommunications giant.A US proposal to also put Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) on the same trade blacklist has caused some of the Chinese chipmaker’s clients to preemptively switch over to its Taiwanese rival, analysts have said.TSMC declined to comment on reports it had applied for a US licence to ship some products to Huawei. Asked about the implications of restrictions on SMIC, executives just said they were evaluating the impact on the semiconductor market.Shares of TSMC have jumped about 36 percent so far this year, giving it a market value of $414 billion (roughly Rs. 30,39,519 crores).© Thomson Reuters 2020Is OnePlus 8T the best ‘value flagship’ of 2020? US Supreme Court to Mull Google Bid to End Oracle Copyright Suit
The US Supreme Court on Wednesday is set to consider whether to protect Alphabet’s Google from a long-running lawsuit by Oracle accusing it of infringing Oracle copyrights to build the Android operating system that runs most of the world’s smartphones. The shorthanded court, down one justice following the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg last month, is scheduled…
The US Supreme Court on Wednesday is set to consider whether to protect Alphabet’s Google from a long-running lawsuit by Oracle accusing it of infringing Oracle copyrights to build the Android operating system that runs most of the world’s smartphones. The shorthanded court, down one justice following the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg last month, is scheduled to hear oral arguments in Google’s appeal of a lower court ruling reviving the lawsuit in which Oracle has sought at least $8 billion (roughly Rs. 58,642 crores) in damages. The arguments will be held by teleconference because of the coronavirus pandemic.A jury cleared Google in 2016, but the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit overturned that decision in 2018, finding that Google’s inclusion of Oracle’s software code in Android was not permissible under US copyright law.Oracle and Google, two California-based technology giants with combined annual revenues of more than $190 billion (roughly Rs.13,92,728 crores), have been feuding since Oracle sued for copyright infringement in 2010 in federal court in San Francisco. The case’s outcome will help determine the level of copyright protection for software, according to intellectual property lawyers.Oracle accused Google of copying thousands of lines of computer code from its popular Java programming language without a license in order to make Android, a competing platform that has harmed Oracle’s business.Google has said the shortcut commands it copied into Android do not warrant copyright protection because they help developers write programs to work across platforms, a key to software innovation.Even if the commands can be copyrighted, Google has said, its use of them was permissible under the “fair use” defense to copyright infringement, which can protect copying that transforms an original copyrighted work. Google has argued that its copying was “undoubtedly transformative” because it resulted in “an entirely new smartphone platform.”The Federal Circuit in 2018 rejected Google’s defense, saying “a mere change in format (eg, from desktop and laptop computers to smartphones and tablets) is insufficient as a matter of law to qualify as a transformative use.”Oracle will recalculate its damages request if it wins at the Supreme Court and the case is sent back to a lower court, Oracle General Counsel Dorian Daley said in an interview. The compensation request would exceed the roughly $8 billion (roughly Rs. 58,661 crores) Oracle previously demanded, Daley added.President Donald Trump’s administration backed Oracle in the case, previously urging the justices to turn away Google’s appeal. The Supreme Court originally scheduled the argument for March but postponed it due to the pandemic. The court has eight justices rather than its full complement of nine. President Donald Trump has asked the US Senate to confirm Amy Coney Barrett, his nominee to replace Ginsburg, by the November 3 US election.© Thomson Reuters 2020OnePlus 8T leaked specs look great but where is the cheaper Nord?
