The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has officially exceeded its post-#OscarsSoWhite goals to diversify its membership, the organization announced Tuesday.
The Academy extended invitations to 819 film industry professionals, of which 45% are women, 36% are from underrepresented ethnic and racial communities, and 49% are international, from 68 countries.

The star-studded list of invitees includes Awkwafina, Zendaya, Ana de Armas, Bobby Cannavale, Olivia Wilde, Ben Mendelsohn, Cynthia Erivo, Brian Tyree Henry, Eva Longoria, Florence Pugh, Constance Wu, Lulu Wang, Ari Aster, and many more. They represent the third-largest class of new members in Academy history.
Following public outcry over a lack of Oscar nominees of color in 2015 and 2016, the Academy set specific inclusion goals as part of its A2020 initiative to double the number of women and people of color by 2020. Both goals have now been achieved, according to the Academy.

“The Academy is delighted to welcome these distinguished fellow travelers in the motion picture arts and sciences,” Academy president David Rubin said in a statement. “We have always embraced extraordinary talent that reflects the rich variety of our global film community, and never more so than now.”
Earlier this month, AMPAS announced its Academy Aperture 2025 initiative, which is aimed at furthering efforts to advance inclusion internally as well as in the entertainment industry at large, by making changes to its Oscars telecast, group governance, and workplace culture.

C-4 makes multiple key changes to the federal government’s suite of pandemic benefits and makes the rules on qualifying for employment insurance more flexible. Last week, the government secured NDP support for the bill by boosting the value of the weekly benefit for self-employed or gig workers to $500 from $400. The New Democrats’ support would all but guarantee the bill’s passage and avoid a snap election.  The Liberal government has been asking Parliament to fast-track the legislation, infuriating opposition critics who accuse the government of ducking another debate after it prorogued Parliament in August. The legislation also would set up three new benefits for Canadians who won’t qualify for EI but are still affected by the COVID-19 crisis. They include the Canada Recovery Benefit for self-employed and gig workers who still won’t qualify for EI, expanded sick leave and caregiver benefits for workers who have to stay home because they or someone they care for has to temporarily isolate because of COVID-19. Pope Francis urged a group of religious dedicated to St Michael the Archangel to continue promoting devotion to this “powerful victor over the powers of evil.”
In a talk to the Congregation of St. Michael Archangel that the Holy See published Friday, the Holy Father noted the congregation’s 100 years of existence. They were founded by Polish priest Blessed Bronislao Markiewicz.
Markiewicz first began his journey as a Salesian who learned directly from that order’s founder, St. John Bosco. He eventually left Rome to return to Poland, continuing the work of John Bosco with poor and orphaned children, and going on to found his order under the patronage of St. Michael.

He died in 1912, and the then archbishop of Krakow – Cardinal Adam Stefan Sapieha – approved the order on the feast of the Archangels, September 29, 1921.
“Don’t stop referring to the words that have enlightened your distinguished congregation for these 100 years: the victorious cry of St. Michael the Archangel: “Who is like God!” — which defends man from egotism; and the principle of “temperance and toil” — which indicates the paths to follow in carrying out your charism,” Francis told the religious.
He added:
I hope that your religious family continues to spread the apostolate of St. Michael the Archangel, that powerful victor over the powers of evil, seeing in it a great work of mercy for the body and the soul.
The pope praised their work for the abandoned and discarded, and also mentioned how the charism of the institute calls them today to work with children who are conditioned by the modern world and slaves of addiction.
According to the Pontifical Yearbook of 2010, the congregation then had 27 houses for 345 religious, including 253 priests. The Generalate is in Poland, but the Attorney General resides in Rome near the Domine Quo Vadis Church.
It was not until September 29, 1921 that the Archbishop of Krakow recognized the congregation nine years after the death of its founder Bronisław Markiewicz. The institute received the decree of praise on June 15, 1966, under the pontificate of Paul VI.
