There’s just a little over two months left before KCON 2019 New York kicks off at Madison Square Garden and Manhattan’s Javits Center, and on Thursday (April 18), the East Coast K-pop event announced the first two acts set to appear. Boy bands NU’EST and TOMORROW X TOGETHER will hit up the July event and perform at its headlining concert events.
Both NU’EST and TOMORROW X TOGETHER are five-member K-pop boy bands, but while the former is in the seventh year of its career, the latter is only in its first.
NU’EST, which is signed to Pledis Entertainment, debuted in 2012 and, after initial acclaim, lost traction in the industry for several years until appearances by several members of the group on the 2017 season of Korean television show Produce 101 resulted in renewed popularity. The quintet performed at the first-ever KCON back in 2012 and were last Stateside during last year’s Los Angeles KCON, which featured NU’EST W, a four-member unit of the group. The act is now back together following the return of Hwang Minhyun from temporary boy band Wanna One, which grew out of Produce 101, and are set to release their new Happily Ever After album on April 29.
TOMORROW X TOGETHER is on the complete opposite end of the career spectrum from NU’EST, having released their first album, The Dream Chapter: STAR, in March. Fronted by their single “Crown,” the act’s debut album landed at No. 140 on the Billboard 200 album chart. They’re set to release a music video for their song “Cat & Dog,” also released on the album, on April 25. The quintet, known as TXT, is signed to Big Hit Entertainment, which also houses BTS.
KCON NY will take place at Madison Square Garden and the Javits Center on July 6 and 7. Along with headlining concerts, it will also feature a wide array of programming related to Korean entertainment and pop culture content.
