The chairman of Taiwan’s Foxconn, assembler of Apple’s iPhones, said on Monday he plans to step down in the coming months as he wants to pave the way for younger talent to move up the ranks of the world’s largest contract manufacturer.
Terry Gou, speaking on the sidelines of an event in Taipei, said that while he planned to resign as chairman, he hoped to remain involved in strategic decisions regarding the company’s business.
When asked by Reuters if he would quit as chairman, Gou said he was moving in that direction, although any decision needed to be discussed with the company’s board.
“I don’t know where you got the information from. But I have to say, basically, I’m working towards that direction – to walk back to the second line, or retire … I have been busy for 45 years. I should hand it over to young people,” Gou said.
“I will be involved in the major direction of the company, but not involved in daily operation.
“I’m already 69 years old. I can pass down my 45 years of experience. That’s the goal I set up – to let young people learn sooner and take over sooner and to replace my position sooner.”
Gou said his plans would be discussed with the board of Foxconn, formally known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, in the coming months.
“Initially, we will tell the shareholders in the AGM in June. In the board meeting in between April-May we will give the new list of board members to the board,” Gou said.
A source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters that Lu Sung-Ching, the chairman of Foxconn Interconnect Technology, the electronic and optoelectronic connectors unit of Foxconn, was among the possible candidates to take over from Gou.
“It doesn’t mean he will just be gone. He will remove himself to the second line and he would not be involved in the daily operations,” the source said.
Foxconn’s shares rose after the news and closed 3.2 percent higher on Monday.
Founded in 1974, the Foxconn group has grown to become the world’s biggest contract manufacturer with TWD 5.2 trillion ($168.52 billion) in annual revenue, assembling goods for Apple, SoftBank Group, and other global tech firms.
Last month, Foxconn reported a smaller than expected fall in quarterly profit, despite warning signs from key customers including Apple that demand for tech electronics was softening.
The news comes three months after Reuters reported Foxconn was reconsidering plans to make advanced liquid crystal display panels at a $10 billion Wisconsin campus.

Steam has received support for PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller and features like LED, trackpad, rumble, and gyro are currently working in the public beta Steam desktop client. The controller will be recognised and will work with all games currently using the Steam Input API. An official post on Steam community forum states that the LED, trackpad, rumble, and gyro features will work with several games, but it does not mention any support for the controller’s signature adaptive triggers. The post also states that platform-wide support will be added for DualSense controller after further testing.A few weeks ago, Valve added initial input support to Steam for the PS5 DualSense controller and at the time, rumble, trackpad, and gyro features were not implemented. After adding these features to the client, Valve has now announced that games using the Steam Input API will recognise the controller. The games that will support LED, trackpad, rumble, and gyro features include Death Stranding, No Man’s Sky, Horizon Zero Dawn, and more. For now, this support is available in the public beta Steam desktop client and to test it out, users will have to opt in for the beta.Valve has also shared that developers will not have to update their games or release patches. The stable release for these features will be added platform-wide after further testing. As of now, there is no exact release date. For developers who are already using Steam Input API in their games, they won’t have to do anything further to enable support for these features. The developers who are not using Steam Input API will have to enable Steam Gamepad Emulation for PlayStation controllers by default.Valve says the number of daily average users playing a Steam game with a controller has more than doubled in the past two years. “The growth in controller usage has been even higher among players using PlayStation controllers, which has grown in the past two years from 10.9 percent of controller play sessions to 21.6 percent of all controller sessions across Steam,” Valve adds.iPhone 12 Pro Series Is Amazing, but Why Is It So Expensive in India? MacBook laptops with Apple’s M1 processor support CrossOver 20 for running some Windows apps. CrossOver is based on the open-source Wine project that allows users to run Windows apps on macOS and Linux. MacBook users won’t have to install Windows to run these apps. This comes as a great news for those who used Boot Camp to run Windows apps on Macs as the new M1-powered ARM-based MacBook models don’t support Boot Camp. CodeWeavers, the team behind CrossOver shared that they were able to run CrossOver on Big Sur 11.1.Developers at CodeWeavers were able to run CrossOver 20 on the new M1-powered MacBook laptops, allowing them to run a wide range of Windows applications, the firm announced in a blog post. They were also able to use the graphical performance of the M1-powered MacBook models to play games like Among Us and Team Fortress 2. The developers state that these Apple Silicon-based MacBook laptops run CrossOver 20 brilliantly. They tested this on the cheapest Macbook Air running Big Sur 11.1 and installed CrossOver 20.0.2 on it.Explaining how this emulation works, the developers said, “Imagine – a 32-bit Windows Intel binary, running in a 32-to-64 bridge in Wine/ CrossOver on top of macOS, on an ARM CPU that is emulating x86.” Essentially, CrossOver 20 is using Rosetta 2 technology that emulates Windows Intel binaries on macOS to emulate x86 binaries on the new ARM-based Mac laptop. The gameplay for Team Fortress 2 shared by CodeWeavers shows some lag in game and not the highest frame rate possible, but bear in mind, it is running on the base-level MacBook Air that does not have active cooling and is missing one GPU core.It seems like CrossOver 20 will work with macOS Big Sur 11.1 beta as it has some critical fixes to Rosetta 2.Will Apple Silicon Lead to Affordable MacBooks in India?
