China may only go so far to revive its economy

Hong Kong (CNN Business)China’s economic slowdown is causing alarm around the world, but President Xi Jinping’s government may be willing to go only so far to limit the damage.Beijing on Tuesday announced 1.3 trillion yuan ($193 billion) worth of new measures designed to stimulate the economy, including tax cuts for small businesses and reduced tariffs. It’s the latest in a flurry of government efforts to prop up growth in recent months, such as boosting infrastructure spending and looser monetary policy.Weakening growth in the world’s second biggest economy combined with the trade war with the United States has spooked investors and prompted warnings from top companies like Apple (AAPL).

London has more statues of animals than it does of women and people of color, a new study says

Across London, 8% of public sculptures depict animals, while only 4% depict women, according to the study from the British charity Art UK, which was published on Thursday. People of color represent just 1% of the city’s sculptures, with women of color accounting for 0.2%, it found. The figures sit in stark contrast to that of statues and sculptures dedicated to men, which account for over 20% of the city’s 1,500 monuments, and over 79% of all statues dedicated to “named people,” the report said.Royalty, military figures, politicians, writers, artists, designers and actors are among the most commonly depicted male subjects, Art UK said. The group has been collecting data on London’s sculptures since 2017 as part of a major research project, which is funded in part by City Hall. Among the UK’s largest cities, London has the highest percentage of sculptures dedicated to women. Nationwide, Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1819 — 1901, is the most represented woman. Many of Britain’s monuments have faced a reckoning since global protests against systemic racism and inequality last year.In June 2020, Black Lives Matter protesters in Bristol, UK, pulled down a statue of 17th-century slave trader Edward Colston and rolled it through the streets before dumping into the River Avon. That same month, a local council in Dorset, southern England, announced it would remove a statue of Scouts founder Robert Baden-Powell following police advice it was on a “target list for attack.” Critics of Baden-Powell say he held homophobic and racist views. With a colonial history spanning centuries — and a mania for erecting statues in the 19th century — Britain’s towns and cities are dotted with monuments to figures like Colston and Baden-Powell.The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, announced a commission in June 2020 to examine the future of landmarks around the UK capital, including murals, street art, street names and statues. The Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm is aimed at improving “diversity across London’s public realm, to ensure the capital’s landmarks suitably reflect London’s achievements and diversity.”This year, the Commission announced that it would be setting up a £1 million (approximately $1.4 million) fund to create new landmarks across London that “better reflect the capital’s diversity and the achievements of all who have contributed to the success of the city.” Art UK’s study is the first comprehensive audit of London’s public monuments and will be used to inform the Commission’s work.

Canada launches proof of vaccination credential for international travel

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement outside a children’s hospital in Ottawa Thursday, saying Canada is among the world’s leaders in vaccination rates and Canadians want to begin traveling again.”As Canadians look to start traveling again, there will be a standardized proof of vaccination certificate,” said Trudeau during a news conference with reporters adding, “we’ve worked very closely with airline operators to ensure that it is as easy and seamless a process as possible.”The vaccine credential, provided by provincial and territorial health departments, will show a name, date of birth, and a Covid-19 vaccine history including the type of vaccine received, doses and the dates those doses were administered.Canada says the Covid-19 proof of vaccination was designed with a common look in mind, even though it will be issued by each province or territory and it will include Canada’s “wordmark” emblem. Government officials say this will allow other countries and transportation providers, such as airlines and cruise ship operators, to recognize this credential as a trusted Canadian document. They add that Canada will continue to engage with the World Health Organization and allies around the world to ensure the credential is accepted as proof of vaccination. So far, many, but not all Canadian provinces and territories have introduced proof of vaccination apps with QR codes for some workers and for entry to many public venues. This new credential will also help Canada enforce one of the toughest vaccine mandates for domestic travel anywhere in the world beginning October 30. At that time, all travelers 12 years of age and older departing from Canadian airports, or boarding the national rail carrier, VIA Rail, will be required to show proof of full vaccination in order to travel. For the month of November only, travelers will be permitted to show a negative Covid-19 molecular test within 72 hours of travel as an alternative.Despite high vaccine uptake, Trudeau says he hopes this new credential will encourage even more Canadians to get vaccinated.Canada has been dealing with pockets of vaccine resistance, especially in the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, where lower vaccination rates have helped fuel a punishing fourth wave of the virus, overwhelming hospitals and intensive care units. According to Health Canada, by early October, at least 72% of Canadians were fully vaccinated with about 82% of those eligible fully vaccinated.
